Sure they help, but I wouldn't call them very important for your rankings at all, especially with the big G. If this is weighted in the overall algorithm I would say it would be very low. Things like this are just too easy to spam and manipulate.
I had no idea that search engines actually counted this when calculating your rank, this whole time i've been ignoring these in CSS! Oh what a fool I am.
