First you should check and see the overall quality of it. See if it actually ranks for anything on Google and how many pages are indexed in Google.
You should check out the categories and see how many links are on each page. You want your site to be listed in a relevant category with not a lot of other web sites in there.
You should also check to make sure there are mainly high quality sites in the directory. You don't want to have a lot of junk sites in there.
Also be careful of directories that require you to reciprocate back and use javascript or nofollow attributes on the links.
Those are a few tips that should help you when choosing a directory.
