What should my Title Tags say?

I've noticed that the length of the title tag has been a topic of discussion across the web lately. It seems that Google only displays the first 60 characters, but will index more (how much more, no on seems to know).

Now, having a 1st place ranking isn't worth anything if no one clicks on it. So make sure those first 60 spaces really say something to make the searcher want to click that link. Basic SEO tells you that each page should only be optimized for a handful of words. Take those words, weave them into a nice, click-provoking sentence.

Also, on the non-SEO related front, remember that what you put in the title tag is also what shows up when users bookmark your pages.

Your title tags should match your content as closely as possible. Your title tag should also be intriguing and get the users attention if possible. Your title tag should be as short as possible and contain the main keywords that you are targeting for that page.

What it SHOULDN'T say is "welcome" thats for sure, welcome doesn't describe your website at all. Idealy what it should say is a simple sentence with your keywords. If you had a website about baby clothes for instance maybe something like this would work:

"Baby Clothes by Levi, GAPbaby, and Urban Outfitters - www.yourwebsite.com"

It describes your site, and also connects you to other brand names that people may search for, but all in a readable way. The website URL at the end will help with your own branding.

At least thats how I understand Title tags. Smiling
