As was already stated, write good content. But to take it a step further, what is good content? If you want links you need to write something that's linkworthy, usually something that invokes some emotion, enthusiasm, anger/outrage, laughter, etc. Need inspiration? Look to places like digg and see how the articles there are written.
For a while everyone was recommending things like 'top 10 ways to...." or "5 surefire ways to..." but these are starting to get old. Make the article informative and give it a title that will make it stand up and grab the reader by both ears.

Create super high quality content that people will want to read and share with their friends. Good content usually attracts lots of quality backlinks

Another way is by finding the links of your competitors using the link: siteurl.com feature on Google and then adding your site to the same places your competitors have.
You can always submit your site to directories as well.
