A lot of readers may find this as a surprise as even Google itself says not to trust an SEO that guarantees rankings, however if the SEO really understands the search engines and what's going on with them a clearer picture can be drawn as to what's achievable and what's not. Allow me to elaborate a bit more:
The first question any experienced SEO would ask you if you told them you wanted a top ten placement would be, what keywords are you going for and how much traffic are you looking to achieve? This is pretty much what SEO boils down to, traffic and keywords.
Most people are usually looking to rank in the top 10 for phrases with low competition which makes the job of SEO a whole lot easier.
It is much easier to understand a small part or piece of something, than the whole thing. Somebody may understand only how the wings of a jet work and nothing else, and be an expert in that field. Somebody else may only understand how the engine works and be an expert in that field. Somebody else may only understand the interior of the jet and be an expert in that. What I'm trying to say is that the more you understand something, the easier it becomes to offer a conclusive answer - and the smaller and more niche oriented something is, the less time it takes to fully understand it.
So back to SEO, if you were to take a smaller more niche-oriented search like maybe "Phoenix Arizona Auto Repair", this is a much more refined search than say "Auto Repair". It is much easier to understand the scope, competition and areas of opportunity in just this small localized area than in the whole broad term. For this reason alone I think it is possible to guarantee SEO. If you know what all your competitors are doing, if you know how you can beat them with better quality, you definitely can (and will) beat them with time.
Whether or not you can actually trust somebody guaranteeing SEO is a completely separate story. I think the simplest way to find this out is to actually go through and see some past results that they have done and see how their results measure up to something you are looking to have done.
Let me give a breakdown of how guaranteed SEO works in my opinion. There are 3 main types of SEOs.
It starts out with the really, really crappy and shady companies that guarantee SEO. They say we can rank you in the top 10 for 20 keywords of your choice. This is fine, but these keywords they rank you for are never searched for, and they still don't rank you for it. These people guarantee everything, but deliver nothing.
The average SEO knows that they can't guarantee rankings according to Google so they won't. They don't have enough experience or knowledge of the search engines and certain categories to actually make an accurate assessment of where a site will most likely end up. These SEOs are generally fine, but just not the top of the game. These people don't do guantees.
These are the SEOs that totally understand everything there is to know about SEO. They are always reading blogs, experimenting and just dominating on their own with the search engines. These are the SEOs that can pretty much predict and know what will happen. If there is a change with the search engines they will know about it and they will know WHY. They will know what is going to happen in the next few years and know how to prepare for the future. They understand with very accurate knowledge why certain things work well with search engines and why other things don't. They pretty much see SEO through Google's eyes. These people you CAN trust if they tell you they can guarantee you an SEO ranking. They know the exact path to take to make it happen. These people make smart, accurate guarantees.
Hopefully this article clears up a few things about SEO and guarantees.

Interesting article, but I feel that I must respectfully disagree. I know of no legitimate SEO firm that offers a guarantee. Just to be on the safe side, I've visited a few websites belonging to the bigger names in this field (bruceclay.com, highrankings.com, etc.) and could not find any mention of the word guarantee. While I do agree that the gurus among us know quite a deal more than the rest, I've never spoken with another guru who claimed to have all the answers as to why things happen or when they will change.
That is an awesome article slayerment! Hopefully this will help people new to search engine optimizaiton.
